Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder was a Flemish-born Dutch still life painter and art dealer. He is recognized as one of the earliest painters who created floral still lifes as an independent genre. He founded a dynasty of painters, including his sons and extended family, who continued his style of floral and fruit painting and turned Middelburg into the leading center for flower painting in the Dutch Republic.

To modern eyes, the present paintings may seem unassuming, however observers in early 1600s Europe would have regarded it as a potent status symbol—an emblem of the owner’s wealth and cultivated taste. The depicted objects represent some of the rarest and most expensive items of the era, ranging from exotic seashells to coveted Semper Augustus tulips—during the fervor of "tulipmania," the price of a single tulip bulb could match that of a manor home—to the exotic Chinese Wan-Li vase, a porcelain so scarce that its importation was just commencing under the Dutch East India Company.
