Art Peritus is thrilled to share the outstanding news of our recent client success story! In partnership with Freemans | Hindman auction in Philadelphia. “The Destruction of the Bastille,” a remarkable drawing created at the onset of the French Revolution for George Washington, sold for an incredible final price of $1,996,000 – more than double its high estimate of $800,000!
This extraordinary ink-wash drawing owes much of its significance to its remarkable provenance. Originally a gift from the Marquis de Lafayette to his ‘adopted father,’ Washington, the piece originated at Mount Vernon before passing through the collection of William Randolph Hearst and now, into the hands of a new owner. Created by Étienne-Louis-Denis Cathala just weeks after the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, this historic artwork captures a pivotal moment in French history, with its storied journey adding to its immense value.
Earlier this summer, the drawing garnered widespread attention during its multi-city exhibition tour. It began in Paris, traveled to New York, and concluded in Philadelphia, where it was prominently displayed at the Museum of the American Revolution before the auction on 10 September. Art Peritus is quite proud to have played a pivotal role with bringing this remarkable work to auction. Our team offered strategic counsel, ensuring that the drawing was consigned to the auction house best suited to showcase it in the most compelling way, attracted the right attention and ultimately achieved the highest possible sale price on behalf of our clients, Shriners Hospital for Children and Masonic Care. We can’t help but smile, knowing that George Washington, a Mason himself, would be thrilled that the funds are benefiting sick children through the same institution of which he was a member.
