For those who lived through the post-punk music scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Ian Curtis remains a defining pioneer of goth and alternative rock. As the lead vocalist and lyricist of Joy Division, he shaped the landmark albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980), whose stark emotional intensity continues to resonate. Curtis lived with severe epilepsy and depression and died by suicide in 1980; the remaining members of the band went on to form New Order. His influence echoes through subsequent decades in artists such as The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Interpol, and The Killers, while his legacy is further preserved through archival materials that will be on view this summer at Voltz Clarke Gallery, New York, in collaboration with the University of Manchester, UK.
As a proud alum of Sotheby’s Institute, London and University of Manchester, we are excited to participate in several upcoming events celebrating this exciting exhibition.
